Ascension from the first to the second dimension
By my definition, when an individual is in the first dimension, his entire life is governed by his instincts. This individual is usually in a situation of extreme precariousness, so that he or she must fight day by day to ensure survival. He may be a native in the rainforest, having to defend himself from the dangers around him, fighting to find food today and a place to sleep tonight. In modern times, it could also be an outsider in a big city, or a person addicted to hard drugs, or a chronic alcoholic. Driven by instinct, this person may end up committing crimes that are punishable by law, so that he or she finds himself or herself incarcerated in a prison. This first-dimensional individual is invaded by many fears linked to the context in which he finds himself : fear of dying, fear of being attacked by wild beasts, fear of running out of food, etc. He may feel ashamed of who he is, of his addictions and of his reprehensible or even criminal acts. He’s very dissatisfied with his life, but doesn’t really know how to get out of it. To ascend from the first to the second dimension, the individual must manage to integrate into a human community in one way or another. If he’s a native of the rainforest, he’ll leave to live in a village or tribe. If he’s an addict, he’ll first have to wean himself off drugs or alcohol. Then he’ll feel a strong desire to be a member of a community in which he feels he has a place, a role to play. In creating the Emmaüs communities, Abbé Pierre set up structures that enabled first-dimension marginalized people to move on to the second dimension. These communities welcome the marginalized, the destitute, former alcoholics, ex-soldiers and sometimes ex-criminals. In Emmaus communities, these people find a place to live – we poor people give.
In modern societies, to move from the first to the second dimension, the individual needs to decide to wean himself off his addictions and accept the constraints of social life, notably that of behaving correctly in society. He needs to feel welcomed and respected for who he is, in a community where he will not be judged for his past, nor criticized or condemned for the way he lived when he was still in the first dimension. The individual, who had never been able to fit into a social group, must now feel able to live within a community, following the rules established within that group. He has thus succeeded in ascending from the first to the second dimension.

Let’s put on our glasses of love, and together, let’s be the courageous builders of a better world, more and more in line with the ideal we feel in our hearts, knowing that, as Albert Schweitzer said: « The ideal remains for us what a star is for the sailor. It cannot be reached, but it remains a guide. »
